Visionary Practice in Digital Orthodontics: SureSmile 2020
Each year Dentsply Sirona brings SureSmile users together for a conference full of high-quality clinical education, product insights, and inspiration. For many of them, the conference is an annual must-attend event to share knowledge and train with well-regarded orthodontic educators. It also offers a chance for the attendees to push one-another professionally to the limits of what is possible in digital aligner therapy. SureSmile 2020 once again delivered by equipping participants with new knowledge and skills to bring back to their patients.
Participants of Dentsply Sirona events have come to expect a high level of education and hands-on training combined with fantastic opportunities for networking both professionally and informally. SureSmile 2020, which took place from the 27th to 29th of February in San Diego, CA, once again delivered an experience that left attendees informed and motivated to put what they learned into practice.

In-depth Clinical Education
This year’s SureSmile Academy conference had a plethora of educational opportunities including lectures, panels, and hands-on sessions delivered by SureSmile experts on biomechanics, aligner design, IDB, wire design, simulations, and aesthetics, among other topics. It included a track specially designed for the practice’s staff as well as the three doctor tracks – advanced, ortho, and master classes. The latter were part of a special pre-conference day that included a session on clinical photography with Dr. Alex Yusupov and an Advanced Surgical Workshop with renowned practitioner, Dr. Melisa Rathburn, who remarked that, “The SureSmile conference is the highlight of my year for orthodontic educational training. It is a meeting where the ‘Best of the Best’ orthodontists from around the world gather to collaborate, share ideas and learn from one another.”
A preview of SureSmile Software 7.6
The SureSmile Software 7.6 officially launches at the beginning of April but participants in San Diego had the opportunity to be the first to learn about the newest features of the latest software release. The SureSmile software made many advancements over the years from being used to plan labial treatment only, to include options such as lingual, surgical simulation as well as full service SureSmile aligners and in-office fabrication of clear aligners. The high precision of the SureSmile software allows practitioners to provide their patients with the highest quality of care.
Customer interaction and panel discussion
Dentsply Sirona knows the value of getting feedback from its customers and understanding their specific needs. Events like the SureSmile Academy’s annual User Conference provide excellent opportunities for dialogue. Between lectures, panels and breakout sessions attendees connected with colleagues, representatives of Dentsply Sirona as well as Key Opinion Leaders. One of the highlights of the event was an open panel discussion, which was hosted by Dr. Terri Dolan, Chief Clinical Officer and Vice President at Dentsply Sirona. Representatives from the Company, such as Eric Bruno, Vice President RCO US and Dr. Alexander Völcker, Group Vice President CAD/CAM & Orthodontics as well as Dr. Melisa Rathburn, an orthodontist from Atlanta, Georgia, discussed how SureSmile can have an impact in the practice.

Visionary speakers with real-world applicability
Over the three-day event there were numerous breakout sessions, treating diverse topics of orthodontics. In his lecture “Primescan & SureSmile Ortho: The Ultimate Digital Workflow” Dr. Shalin Shah, for example, demonstrated the seamless connection between Primescan and SureSmile Ortho software. He described how to improve the integration of digital scanning to increase treatment conversions and improve the efficiency of practice management. Dr. Melisa Rathburn explained in her lecture “Scripting the Script: Sharing the SureSmile Message” how a SureSmile practice not only sets itself apart from other practices, but also communicates this USP to patients the best possible way: through social media, the first phone call, patient care or the team.
In the lecture “Orthodontic Practice 2020: Versatility is The Name of The Game” Dr. Antonino Secchi talked about the rapid changes in the way orthodontics is practiced, due to new technologies that offer many more ways to treat the patients. He presented various types of digitally driven and traditional treatment modalities that address a variety of clinical challenges. In his lecture “Precisely Planned” Dr. Alex Yusupov focused on backward planning. He recommended to firstly define the treatment goals and then to create the plan to get there. This plan leads to a checklist to be used as a step-by-step guide to achieve the desired occlusion.
Inspiration beyond dentistry
Beyond the excellent programs during the day, SureSmile 2020 had a special atmosphere that began with a Welcome Reception at the Rooftop Pool where attendees chatted over cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. Another highlight was Friday night’s gala dinner under the motto "Roaring 20s" on the flight deck of the legendary decommissioned aircraft carrier, the USS Midway.
